I have been in San Miguel de Allende for two days. San Miguel is also in the state of Guanajuato where I have been for almost a month and the town is a tourist destination with more expensive hotels and restaurants. There are many US and Canadians ex-pats living here, english is heard spoken on the streets and many shops will trade in US dollars. It is a community that was revived by artist (mostly US) settling here in the 20th century. San Miguel is a beautiful colonial town, but no more so than Guanajuato or Dolores Hidalgo.
Like in the Spanish designed colonial towns in Mexico the plaza is the focal point of the city and San Miguel is no different. It has a beautiful main plaza.
